A Beginner’s Guide to Retargeting Campaigns

We’d all like to think that every single person that comes in contact with our business follows a very straight and orderly path to purchase. Someone visits our site for the first time, then fills out a form to download an ebook, then becomes interested in talking with a sales rep, all in one session on your website. Minutes later, the sales rep reaching out to this lead, and before you know it, the lead is becoming a customer, handing over their credit card to purchase something from your company.

But in reality, the buyer’s journey is probably not so linear. People pop over to your website then leave. Two months later, they discover your latest blog article, and then decide to download that ebook. A few days after that, they decide to check out another blog post. Maybe a week later they decide to get in touch with Sales, and it takes several more weeks of meetings and discussions to come to a decision to buy. Same end result, but the process is a little more convoluted.

Marketers Remain Cautious Despite Consumer Sentiment Uptick

Many Hold Spending in Check, Say Economic Indicator’s Rosy Report Doesn’t Match Their Metrics

Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index

U.S. consumers are feeling pretty good right now — as good as they have since the pre-recession days of July 2007, according to one recently released key measure. But many marketers are unconvinced that the so-called new normal is about to be replaced by the old ebullience.

The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index posted a nearly six-year high this month. Its increase since November 2011 is stronger than any since the early 1980s, when the U.S. emerged from back-to-back recessions.

History shows the index is not to be taken lightly. It accurately predicted the last five recoveries and last two recessions (lagging behind the prior three it didn’t predict). Nor is it alone in flashing green. The Dow Jones Industrial Index recently reached a high. The unemployment rate, while still a steep 7.5%, has been steadily declining. And housing starts rebounded the past year, particularly in recession-ravaged California. All this comes despite a 2% hike in the payroll tax and federal budget cuts in recent months.

So why aren’t marketers jumping for joy? Many have other metrics on their minds.

12/12/12 – Why Not Review The Year On Twitter

If you haven’t jumped on board twitter because you think it is just a fad, or if there is just not enough time in the day to tweet. The 2012 year in review from Twitter may help you realize that there is a whole world out there… and they could be talking about YOU!  Don’t let those conversations go unnoticed.  Be apart of the community.  It will take some work, there is no way around that… but with an open and positive attitude (stop trying to sell to everyone) success is only a tweet away.  Enjoy! Facebook Timeline Touts Lift in Brand Page Engagement

Just a day before Facebook timeline becomes mandatory for all Brand Pages – We read on Mashable that the change might not be so bad.  highlights a recent study on Facebook’s timeline that would suggest that these new brand timelines might actually create a better relationship between companies and consumers.  Wasserman says, “If you’re a marketer wondering if migrating your brand to Facebook Timeline was worth the effort, here’s some encouraging data: A researcher reports that brands are getting an average 46% more engagement with Timeline. The researcher, Simply Measured, drew its results from an admittedly small sample: just 15 Facebook brand pages. Doing so may have created a false sense of lift, especially since the greatest beneficiaries, Livestrong and Toyota, saw their engagement rates jump 161% and 156%, respectively.”

Tweeter Problems? Why People Are Not Following You Back

It is normal to get discouraged because social media platforms are not going as well as you thought they would be – if it were easy everyone would have 234 Million “followers.”

1. You Tweet Too Little

Potential followers often glance through your Twitter feed to see what you’re tweeting about and how often. If it looks like you’re only tweeting once a week, I’m going to assume you’re not much of a Twitter enthusiast. No sense in increasing my follower count with someone who barely tweets.

2. You Mostly Broadcast But Rarely Engage

If you’re running a one-man (or one-woman) show on Twitter, I’m not your audience. I look for tweeters who are not only sharing their own links and opinions, but who are retweeting and responding. You want to have a conversation, not view a monologue.

Let the battle begin. Steve Olenski writes for socialmediatoday.com.  Olenski says the battle of the sexes is over…women win hands down.

This idea of more companies looking to more brand ambassadors came to Olenski when he saw this graph.

Olenski’s ideas have evolved even more… Today he writes “In discussing the findings of a study conducted by her own company, BlogHer – the leading participatory news, entertainment and information network for women online – CEO and co-founder Lisa Stone said the following…

“…there’s no one a woman trusts more for advice, recommendations and guidance than another woman in her circle.”  And when you factor in that women account for 85% of all consumer purchases including everything from autos to health care, it only stands to reason that the most powerful ambassador a brand can have… is a woman.

Experts Agree, New Facebook Will Impact Businesses

Social Media Examiner looks at 7 new Facebook changes that will impact businesses.  And if you are already stressed out about the upcoming changes… don’t worry.  We have till the end of March to get ready!

We’ve told you about how to make your huge timeline picture pretty so today we want to post about the Insights page – the real information- the ROI- the big bad wolf- the nuts and bolts- the heart and soul – the…I think you get the point.

Facebook Insights, Admin Panel and Messaging

Another change with the Timeline is the location of the Insights. You can now access them by clicking on the Admin Panel in the upper right corner.

The Admin Panel tells you about new notifications and gives you access to the “back-end” of your Facebook page.

The Admin Panel has much different navigation than before, but everything appears to be there.

You will still be able to see the old-style Page Dashboard if you click the Manage drop-down menu and then Edit Page.

Click Edit Page to see the old-style Page Dashboard.

From the Admin Page, you can also invite your email contacts, invite friends, share your page and create an ad from the Build Audience drop-down menu.

Use the Build Audience drop-down menu to access several options on getting the word out about your page.

Facebook has done a nice job of giving us lots of options to learn more about the new page design from the Help drop-down menu. During the Preview, the Help drop-down menu links to tutorials, but once you publish your Timeline you will have access to some different options.

One of the capabilities will be to easily request a name change for your page. This name change is the title of your page, not the custom URL you may have set for your page. You can still access this form here. Great news for people who have changed their company branding, have had a misspelling in the name or have other tweaks they have wanted to make.

One of the most interesting developments of the new page Timelines is that we can now get more information on other pages that have changed to the new Timeline. When you click on the Likes box, just underneath their Timeline cover photo you can see the most popular age group, a People Talking About This Trend graph and their most popular week.

public insightsYou can now see more Insight information about any page that has the new Timeline.

Companies could possibly hide the Likes box by swapping it to a lower position than the top 12 apps that are accessible to the public. But that would also hide the social proof of how many people like your page.

Pages will also have the ability to receive messages from fans. The Message feature can be turned on or off from the Manage Permissions area of the Admin Dashboard.

The Message button is enabled by default so if you want to disable it, you will have to uncheck the box. Messages can only be initiated by a fan—they cannot be initiated by the page to a fan. The page can reply to the message sent.

5 Reasons You Need to Meet in Person

inc.com’s René Shimada Siegel provides some great tips on why putting down the technology and meeting in-person is still valuable.

What can you learn from an in-person meeting that you can’t from a virtual one?

1. You’re off the record. In Silicon Valley and many other places, there are few private offices. Many of my clients work in cubes and can’t have private telephone conversations with me or anyone else. This means that when I talk to them on the phone, I might not get to hear the most important information they can share: the unique team dynamics or executive’s personality quirks that would make or break our ability to match an expert consultant. Over sushi or a latte or a walk around the block, my clients can let me know more — with more color — than they can over the telephone or in an email.

2. Make use of not-so-small talk. Most business conversations are focused on solving a problem quickly and efficiently, while business relationships are built when people take the time to share and learn more about each other. That happens more naturally in person than over the phone or in an email. What cements a bond between people? Small talk about a favorite team, passion for pecan pie, parenting challenges, and the other bits and pieces that make us unique and interesting.

Facebook Timeline For Pages Kills Marketing Feature: Default Landing Tabs

Businesses Beware! We all knew it was coming – Company pages will soon be required to update their page to the hated loved new “Timeline.”

Josh Constine writes for tech crunch about the effects this change will have on marketers and company pages. Constine says, “Amongst the beautiful covers and pinned posts, there’s one disadvantage of the new Facebook Timeline for Pages redesign. Pages can no longer display one of their custom applications as their default landing tab that non-fans first see when they visit. This powerful marketing feature let Pages set up a welcome app that teased special content like contests or coupons, but required users to Like the Page for access.

Without default landing tabs, non-fans have to actively click through the little app tiles overshadowed by a Page’s cover. Many won’t, and it will cost marketers Likes as well as email signups, contest entries, and other key performance indicators. The change is a noble one that prioritizes the user experience and the site’s long-term health, but several marketers I’ve talked to are already grumbling.”
